FN Key Mute and Volume Change on CPx J in WinXP

Bought a used CPx J and upgraded to WinXP... since then i haven';t been able to use the FN keys to mute or change the volume... In another thread somebody found some software (quickset) that, once installed, allowed them to do this on another model of latitude...

However, after exhaustively searching as well as many phone calls with dell's completely indept tech support phone staff, I'm starting to think that similar software doesn't exist for the admittedly dated CPx J.

Does anybody running winxp on a CPx J know of a way to fix this problem?

kajeling,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Dell does not support this operating system on this system, however the Fn functions are controlled by the BIOS.  I would recommend either updating or resetting this on your computer.

Thank you for replying.  However, this is not the problem.  The subset of Fn keys for which bios is responsible works fine.  I can use Fn keys to change the brightness of my screen, as well as to eject cd's and the like.  The functionality i am lacking is strictly software (specifically OS) controlled.  Obviously this is why upgrading to WinXP resulted in a loss of functionality, as I no longer have the software capable of communicating with the operating system.  Dell has no interest in remedying this situation, of course, which is why this post is mainly directed at any enterprising end-users out there who found or devised a work-around for this frustrating problem.

I am looking for the (correct) solution to this in WinXP, as well.  I may try flattening the hard drive and installing a fresh Win2K load, then upgrading to WinXP.  Hopefully, the drivers will come along for the ride.  In Win2K, I'll certainly examine what drivers are being loaded for the keyboard.

Try one or all of these steps:

1. Reinstall sound driver.

2. Reinstall keyboard driver.

You can download the drivers for XP at Dell support website.

I am not sure that will help you or not , but it did help me to solve the same problem.

Good luck.

Why is a system tied to a particular version of the OS? What version of OS should I be using on my Latitude Cpx?

Isn't there some software that I can simply istall to make my fn keys work again on Win XP Pro...

shada,

As per our licensing agreement with Microsoft, Dell, as an OEM, may provide support for the original operating system that came pre-installed on the computer only.  Support for any other operating system defaults to the manufacturer of the operating system.  The most I can do is suggest a BIOS update.
